Kicks Off the #EveryDayCounts Tour

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Thursday, August 17, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will present the statewide, public schools, and public charter schools results from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC). In its third year, the PARCC results show the percentage of students who are on track for the next grade level and college or career ready. The PARCC results also display an overall increase in English language arts and mathematics from DC students. Following the presentation, Mayor Bowser will celebrate the completion of renovations at Watkins Elementary School, a $44 million modernization project in Ward 6. The modernization includes a 26,338 square foot addition that consists of new administrative spaces, an outdoor classroom, state-of-the-art media center, and a new cafeteria and gym.

The announcement and ribbon cutting ceremony will launch the Every Day Counts! Tour, a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of attendance and student achievement. The Bowser Administration know that every day of school counts, and yet approximately one out of every four students in DC is chronically absent (missing 10 percent or more of the school year). Attendance is a key predictor of many important youth outcomes such as reading proficiency and high school graduation. Every Day Counts! is a citywide effort to ensure every student attends school every day through a public awareness campaign; increased coordination across public agencies and stakeholders; and investments in data-driven strategies to increase attendance. Together, Mayor Bowser and the Every Day Counts! Task Force will be rewarding students and schools that improve attendance this year.

As part of Mayor Bowser’s work to accelerate education reform, the Bowser Administration recently announced a tentative agreement on a new contract that significantly increases compensation for DCPS teachers for the first time in five years; launched extended-year at thirteen DC Public Schools (DCPS); opened Ron Brown College Preparatory High School, DC’s only all-boys public high school; fully-funded a travel abroad program for DCPS students; launched the Summer Strong DC initiative; increased access to libraries and books; and expanded access to hands-on learning opportunities.

In her Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Budget, Mayor Bowser invested $1.74 billion in public education, an increase of $121 million over last year’s budget and the largest investment ever in Washington, DC. The proposed contract agreement with the Washington Teachers Union would add $110.5 million to DCPS and $92.6 million to public charter schools FY2017-FY2021.
