(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Saturday, April 22 at 12 pm, in recognition of Earth Day, Mayor Muriel Bowser will kick off DC Government’s first citywide Food Waste Drop-Off Program. Through this new free service, residents will be able to drop off food waste at designated farmers markets, one in each ward, on Saturdays. The food waste will then go to a local composting facility where it will be turned into compost, a nutrient rich soil amendment.
Since 2015, Mayor Bowser’s bold agenda to move the city towards zero waste has saved residents money, created more local jobs, and helped maintain Washington, DC as one of the most sustainable cities in the country.
For more information on acceptable items and special activities at the launch event, visit dpw.dc.gov/foodwastedropoff. The first 100 participants will receive a free basil giveaway.
