Mayor Bowser to Kick Off AlleyPalooza 6.0

Tuesday, October 10, 2017
City-Wide Initiative will Repair and Renovate 64 Alleys Across All Eight Wards

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Wednesday, October 11, at 11:30  am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Jeff Marootian, DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) Interim Director, to launch AlleyPalooza 6.0, a city-wide effort to repair or renovate alleys across the city. To ensure that alleys most in need of repair were selected for AlleyPalooza, DDOT implemented a data-driven approach to select alleys by creating an assessment tool similar to the system used for roadways. The factors used by the assessment tool include the condition of the alleys; number of service requests; age of the service requests; and community feedback.

Since the program inception in 2015, the Bowser Administration renovated or repaired 200 alleys in AlleyPalooza 1.0 and AlleyPalooza 2.0; 70 alleys in AlleyPalooza 3.0; 64 alleys, with an additional seven outside the campaign, in AlleyPalooza 4.0; and 64 alleys in AlleyPalooza 5.0.

For the past two and a half years, Mayor Bowser invested $175 million in local infrastructure, roads, alleys, and sidewalks, and nearly 400 alleys have been improved throughout the city. Through increased budget allotments and improved financial and program management, Mayor Bowser increased funding for alley maintenance and rehabilitation to unprecedented levels. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2014, $4.13 million was spent on alley maintenance and rehabilitation; in FY 2015, the funding increased to $13.95 million – more than three times the amount spent the previous year; and in FY 2016, the funding increased again to $15.82 million.

As a part of Back to Basics DC, an effort to highlight the day-to-day work that keeps the District moving forward, the Mayor will continue to recognize the work of DC government employees, showcase innovations in service delivery, and share information about how the community can help the government keep Washington, DC a great place to call home.
