Mayor Bowser to Highlight Economic Impact of The Wharf

Wednesday, October 11, 2017
The New Southwest Waterfront Development will bring more Jobs, Affordable Housing, and Inclusive Prosperity for DC Residents

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Thursday, October 12, at 10:30 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will attend the grand opening of Phase 1 of The Wharf, a new mile-long waterfront neighborhood of residential, hotel, office, retail, and entertainment venues on the Potomac River in Southwest, DC.

During the event, Mayor Bowser will highlight the economic impact of the 3.2 million square-foot development, which will produce nearly 6,000 permanent jobs and provide $94 million in direct annual tax revenue to the District. The Bowser Administration invested approximately $200 million in tax increment financing and secured agreements with The Wharf to hire at least 51 percent of Washingtonians – 20 percent designated for Ward 8 residents; 30 percent of apprenticeships for Wards 7 and 8 residents; and The Wharf invested $1 million in workforce training for DC residents.

Earlier this week, Mayor Bowser unveiled two new transit methods to get to The Wharf: the Southwest DC Shuttle and the Water Taxi. The neighborhood shuttle service will run seven days a week and is free and open to the public. The regional water taxi service will begin on Thursday, October 12, with stops in Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria, and scheduled to expand to the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland in Spring 2018. Approximately 20,000 residents and visitors are expecting to visit The Wharf on each of the four days of opening events.
