Mayor Bowser to Break Ground on Housing and Retail Development in Ward 1

Wednesday, November 29, 2017
New Residential and Retail Development will include 132 Affordable Housing Units and a New Whole Foods Market

(WASHINGTON, DC) – On Thursday, November 30, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau and Brian Kenner, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), to break ground for The Wren at 965 Florida Avenue, NW. The Wren, which is led by DMPED, is a mixed-use, mixed-income development that will produce more than 430 apartment units, including 132 units of affordable housing, and a new Whole Foods Market grocery store. The housing and retail project also includes more than $500,000 in community benefits, and improvements to streets, sidewalks, and the intersection at Florida and Sherman Avenue, NW.

Since coming into office, the Bowser Administration has sparked the creation or preservation of more than 9,600 affordable units, with another 3,300 units in preconstruction. In Fiscal Year 2017, the District made historic investments in affordable housing, getting more than $138 million in Housing Production Trust Fund financing out the door to support 23 projects that will produce or preserve more than 1,900 affordable units. In September, the District was recognized for its multi-pronged approach to housing production and preservation, homeownership, and development of vacant properties when it was selected for the Urban Land Institute’s Larson Housing Policy Leadership Award.
