(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that nonprofit organizations in the District of Columbia are eligible to apply for federal grant money to support efforts for target hardening, planning, training, and other security-related activities at their facilities. The grants are managed through the District of Columbia’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) as part of the US Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP).
“Last year, my administration awarded $2.5 million in security and preparedness grants for faith-based, nonprofit organizations in the District,” said Mayor Bowser. “These grants help us ensure residents and visitors feel safe in our houses of worship and provide our faith communities with critical opportunities to develop comprehensive responses to security threats.”
The NSGP funding can be used by nonprofits to make their operations safer, including the purchase of physical security enhancements such as cameras, new doors, locks, gates, and security personnel. Applications for the NSGP must be submitted no later than Friday, March 27, 2020, to HSEMA, which is the State Administrative Agent for this grant.
“The NSGP allows nonprofit organizations to make security enhancements that could be the difference in preventing another tragedy,” said HSEMA Director Dr. Christopher Rodriguez. “We’re committed to ensuring the safety and security of District residents, businesses, and visitors and the facilitation of this grant is one way we’re building resilience within our community.”
Applying nonprofits must complete the application, which includes an Investment Justification document, mission statement, and a copy of the nonprofit’s vulnerability/risk assessment. Each individual nonprofit organization may be awarded up to a maximum of $100,000. For questions about the application process, please email: [email protected].
